It was new-fashioned, spotless and in traditional japanese style. The hotel was in the very central setting right beside temple which had nightly food vendors. I was there for the trip and had a really amazing stay, so I will be back.

Nice spacious room, in traditional Japanese style. First night we had a Japanese style breakfast, but our room attendent exlained after the first breakfast, that they offer Western breakfast too, despite the fact that we finished almost all. But in all fairness, one typical Japanese breakfast was enough for us and we did order Western for the next day.
We had a comfortable stay and enjoyed the experience a lot, I find it rather expensive and would say room rate should (considerably) be less...

Wonderful service. Quiet yet central location next to Yasaka shrine. Even during the Gion Festival we were able to sleep quietly. The hotel makes a laptop available in the lobby so you can check your emails. The hotel staff made reservations for restaurants and gave us advice about the area. Most of all though, our room attendant, was adorable. We hope to come back to Kyoto again and we would definitely like to stay at Hatanaka again.
We were happy with the bathroom, but some people may say it is a bit small.

Excellent location. It is a large ryokan, but yet it gives you the sense of intimacy. Great onsen.
Dinner is good but priced on the up side, when compared to the other options in the vicinities.
